I enjoy making both baby blankets and baby layettes and sometimes I am at a loss for which to make for an expectant mother. For anyone out there (mother or not) which would you rather have? On one hand I can see a blanket being very useful. But then again, babies tend to get a TON of blankets so maybe it's over kill. Layettes, although not as useful, are so cute and can easily be put away for the next child. I've reserved all my layettes for girls because I have yet to find a boy's pattern I liked so maybe take that into consideration as well.

Is what you made Kate called a layette? Well, if so, we've definitely loved it! It's very sweet, but of course, used for special occasions only. A blanket would get more everyday use. . So. . . you must ask yourself -- do I want myself thought of everyday or on special, beautiful occasions?
Here are two definitions for a layette:
1.Clothing and other items such as bibs and receiving blankets that a newborn baby will need.
2.kit consisting of a complete outfit (clothing and accessories) for a new baby
In the crocheting world it seems to be a sweater, bonnet, and bootie set sometimes with a blanket.
I guess from my point of view I don't have a preference as to layette or blanket, I just want to make sure I'm giving people what they want and need. I tend to think the layettes are most special especially since people don't tend to give those anymore and they are so cute. Maybe I'll just alternate. Baby A gets a blanket, Baby B gets a layette, etc. :-)
I think both are equally special because of the time and love put into each piece.
I agree with Julie. And from a mommy's perspective -- are most of the yarns available machine washable??? If I have to hand wash something (especially for a newborn) it won't get used much!
Most baby yarns are machine washable as they don't tend to be made of wool or silk. The only time I've made anything that wasn't machine washable is when it has ribbons on it (such as the layette) but since they don't get used on a daily or weekly basis I didn't feel too bad about that. :-) All afghans are machine washable and usually machine dryable (some yarns give you the option of laying flat to dry).
