Greta took a bottle tonight for the first time. I'm such a rule follower I had to hold out until that 6 week mark before we tried. :-) She complained a bit at first until she figured out there was good stuff inside. I'd tried giving her a pacifier (
the kind like they get at the hospital) but she really didn't like it so I wasn't that hopeful for the bottle. She did great and ate 5 ounces. That leads me to my question. Those of you that use a bottle, does this sound like a lot? Granted it was her right before bedtime feeding and she always eats for a long time when I nurse her (40 minutes compared to 10 minutes during the day). I'm just trying to figure out what kind of increments to freeze my milk in. I've been doing 2 or fewer ounces since 2 was what was recommended and I'd only been getting that much but my pumping has been getting more productive so I'm wondering if should freeze in higher increments or split it up into 2 bags. I hate to throw any of the milk away, it seems such a waste.

I have always frozen milk in smaller increments. I figure I'd rather use two bags than have milk go to waste. For her bottle this past Saturday, Ben said Lauren took all 4 oz. really well.He thought she might have even drank more. I think sometimes when she doesn't drink it all it is b/c she is holding out for me. When I nurse after missing a feeding (where she gets a bottle)she always nurses longer than usual.
Luke does the same thing - takes the bottle okay, but you can tell he would much rather be nursing. I am impressed she took it that well - that is awesome!!! As far as the amount, each baby is so different. However, I think Dr. generally say that you can't feed a baby too much, because they will just spit up the excess. There is an almost 4mth. old on my online board whose Mom pumped off 10oz. in the evening in about 10min. and she still had more. She knows that he always nurses her dry, so she is guessing that he is eating around 60oz. rough estimate a day. As far as freezing milk, I also usually freeze it in 2oz. bags - I CANNOT waste liquid gold!!!!! BTW, we need some new Greta pics:)
Thanks for reinforcing what I already thought. I'll keep doing it in 2 oz. 10 oz in 10 minutes - wow! I thought I was doing good to get 4 oz. When I pump I get the majority of the milk in the first 10 minutes and then nothing else until the end when I get a tiny bit more. Sometimes I feel like those additional 10 minutes are a waste of time since nothing really comes out but who knows.
Rachel - I've been posting pictures of Greta on dropshots - have you looked there? The address is www.dropshots.com/ubthere2.
Oh my goodness- 10 oz in 10 minutes!? This is why Claire has never gotten a bottle in her life... it takes me 30+ minutes to pump ONE MEASLY LITTLE OUNCE! Sheesh. :-| You people who can actually pump milk amaze me. I'm just grateful that apparently my babies can manage to get it out. lol
Dear me... this all sounds complicated. I haven't even attempted to pump/bottle feed!!! Well, at least first timers, like me, know from where to get advice!!! :)
