Wow - how nice to get some freebies!
I HATE that glucose test. The drink was sooo disgusting I had to chase every sip with a gulp of water. Needless to say my bladder was ready to explode when I got to the doctor's office!
The drink actually wasn't too bad - just tasted like fruit punch but a little thicker and sweeter. Also, they told me I couldn't have any water once I started drinking it until they took my blood. My main complaint is it spiked my blood sugar and then my blood sugar crashed making me feel all woozy. I am so ready for dinner!
I dreaded that test so much, but when I finally drank it, I agree with your take on it, Kelley. It was like some sort of crazy Kool-aid. Great about all of the new/free stuff. Free is the best! Random note: I never used a boppy slipcover, but then again, I didn't have a very spitty uppy baby.
I used my boppy cover..my child had to eat twice the normal amount because half of it wouldn't stay down. I also didn't mind the drink. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't awful. I was more dreading the needle at the end of the hour..yuck. Free stuff is always great. I love free baby stuff. Oh and one last thing. You MUST buy gripe water for gas for your baby. It was a LIFE saver!! It also got rid of hiccups too. This is the kind I used, and I got it from the Vitamin Shoppe. http://www.wellements.com/gripewater.asp
Ah- the GTT test. I declined it. Haha- I'm such a rebel! It's just as good (if not better- according to my midwives) to test the blood sugar two hours after a normal healthy meal. It's just a finger prick! Very easy and no fasting necessary and no crazy death-by-sugar drink to choke down. (Not to mention that blood sugar spike that is just unpleasant.) Anyway, just in case you ever wanted to know any alternatives! And there's less chance of false positives! I don't know why the standard GTT test hasn't been changed ages ago. But then there are all sorts of standard tests and procedures existent in our current medical system that should be totally banished (yeah- I do lots of research on this stuff...) but that's a whole nother story.
There are some standard prenatal tests that have a greater probability of false positives than your actual chance of having what it is testing for. Isn't that bizarre!? I no longer opt for most of the standard prenatal tests. I'm just grateful I have supportive midwives who believe in making educated informed choices. :) During my pregnancy with Emily I was literally clueless about all this stuff. Wish I had known then what I know now... but that's life I guess. Live and learn!
I learned a lot through my pregnancy/birth with Emily and I learned even more through my pregnancy/birth with Claire- maybe someday I'll get everything exactly right! (Ha.)
I knew about a lot of the issues with the GTT going into it (I'm a research addict) so I'm very well prepared for a false positive. I really did want to decline it but figured I'd do it this go around and will probably decline with any future children. The only other pre-natal tests that I've had done (that I can think of) are the regular ultrasounds. I declined the triple screen (or maybe it was quad screen - who knows), the first trimester U/S and the cystic fibrosis screen. Graham and I figure if there's anything wrong with the baby it's not gonna make a difference - it's not like we would abort it and the chances of false positives are too great and might result in months of undue stress for us. Not to mention that we are not considered "at risk" for any of the things they were testing for.
One more thing about the GTT - I never really felt my blood sugar spike - it was actually the crash afterwards as I sat in the office waiting for the doctor to see me which was the worst. My body is used to a small mid afternoon snack so apart from the fact that I ate lunch earlier than normal, then chugged that stuff, and didn't eat again for several more hours I was feeling pretty awful. By the time Graham came home and we ate dinner I could barely think. Once I ate though, I felt great. The fact that he took me to Carabbas may have had something to do with that! :-)
Oh I'm glad that you're informed about all the tests. It disturbs me a little when women just blindly follow whatever their doctor my recommend without taking responsibility for their own bodies and making sure they know the risks/pros/cons of every choice! It's scary sometimes. Yeah- we feel the same way about the triple screen etc- it wouldn't make a difference to us! No matter what this baby is like we'll gladly accept him or her into our life.
